Our Nitronox cylinders are slightly different to our oxygen cylinders, they are a different colour, so the shoulder on the cylinder is quartered as blue and white. And that signifies white for the 50% medical oxygen content and blue for the nitrous oxide content. The body of the cylinder itself is pure white, like an oxygen cylinder. The cylinders will have a barcode label on which contains all of our information regarding the cylinder, expiry dates, batch numbers, fill dates. The shoulder of the cylinder will have various information stamped on it such as the cylinder's serial number, manufacture dates, or test dates. The cylinders have a 10-year life and after 10 years the cylinders go in for a test, if they pass the test they will get signed off for another 10 years, with a stamp. There will be a product label on the cylinder, with the manufacturer's details and contact numbers. And it will also have safety information on there; how to handle the gas, the product.

The regulators that are attached to the cylinders these days are mostly integral regulators, so they cannot be detached from the cylinders. The regulator on a Nitronox cylinder has a contents gauge which shows you exactly how much gas is in the cylinder at any time. And it also has a quick-connect or Schrader-type connector which is used for attaching ancillary equipment such as demand valves. There will also be an on-off switch on a Nitronox cylinder which allows the gas to enter the regulator from the cylinder itself.

There will be a charge port on the cylinder which will be blanked off with a dust cap and that's where the cylinders are actually filled at the production facility. The demand valves that are used with the Nitronox cylinders are quite a simple device, they have a quick-connect Schrader-type probe on one end which plugs into the quick-connects on the regulator of the cylinder. It then has a hose which are typically either 1.5 meters or 3 meters long and they will then have a demand valve on the other end of the hose. The demand valve will have a test button on the back of it for testing the system and purging the system. And the demand valve will release gas when it senses a breath, so a patient sucking on it basically, so it's self-administered gas.
